We were so prepared.
The gutters were clean of debris.
We were going to get through the snow storm.
NO problem.
Then it warmed up a tiny bit.
The sun melted all that snow.
It slowly started to drain down the gutters, but then the temperatures plunged back to 15 degrees. Oh no, the melting snow froze inside my gutters and my
roof drainage system is now not working at all.
The inevitable Ice Dam occurs. We really don’t want any interior leaks. What do we do?
- Hire a Contractor. I should definitely have a roof contractor on my list of people who can help in an emergency. But if I can’t get that done…

Melt the ice dam: Fill a nylon stocking with calcium chloride ice melt. Place it vertically across the dam. It will melt a channel. The water will drain
out instead of in. Don’t use rock salt! -
